# Segments

Segments allow you to easily analyze your data based upon audience demographics in the Remesh platform.

### What is a Segment?

A Segment is a group of participants who have been grouped together for easy analysis. This can be based upon polls asked during your Conversation, or a hand-selected group of participants.

Here are some examples of Segments:

- Men between the ages of 18 and 35
- People between the ages of 45 and 64 who selected option B on a poll question asking which packaging design was their favorite during the conversation
- 3 participants that were selected based upon their responses to open end questions in the Conversation

### Where are Segments Found?

You can create segments before, during and after a Conversation. You can analyze with Segments during and after a Conversation.

### Creating Automated Segments

1. Create your [Onboarding Polls](https://help.remesh.ai/question-type-onboarding-polls?hsLang=en)
2. Once you’ve added your Onboarding Polls, navigate to the **Segments** tab. You should now see all Single-select Onboarding Poll questions listed here.
3. If you do not wish to see a specific AutoSegment, toggle them off individually or entirely by clicking the Hide All toggle below the Create Segment button.![Segments 1](https://help.remesh.ai/hs-fs/hubfs/Knowledge%20Base%20Article%20Images/Segments/Segments%201.gif?width=655&height=419&name=Segments%201.gif)
4. Selected Onboarding Polls will automatically create segments for each of the onboarding poll options.

### Creating Custom Segments

Start creating a Custom Segment by clicking the plus button wherever you find the Segment menu. There are two types of custom segments - Polls & Options and Advanced.

**Polls and Options Custom Segment**

Create a Custom segment based upon how participants responded to a poll or polls in the Conversation.

- Create your [Polls](https://help.remesh.ai/question-type-poll?hsLang=en) and/or [Onboarding Polls](https://help.remesh.ai/question-type-onboarding-polls?hsLang=en)
- Once you have created Polls or Conversation Polls, navigate to Segments.
- Click **Create Segment**
- Enter a name for your new segment
- Click **+** next each of the variables you want to include in the Segment

**Advanced Custom Segment**

Create a custom segment of hand-picked participants. Use this to analyze or to [schedule a follow up Video Interview with that group.](https://help.remesh.ai/live-conversation-to-video-interview?hsLang=en)

- Create segment and select **Advanced.**
- Choose your participants either by email address if using [Remesh email management](https://help.remesh.ai/manage-email-invitations-and-reminders?hsLang=en) Participant ID or Unique ID if using [unique links](https://help.remesh.ai/audience-links?hsLang=en), orParticipant ID if using [single participant links.](https://help.remesh.ai/audience-links?hsLang=en) Or, add additional participants during your Conversation.
- Name your segment, and save.
- During your Live Conversation, you also have the option to hand-pick participants you'd like to add to an advanced segment by clicking the **View Participant** icon next to one of their responses, click **Add to Segment** then close.

- You can now analyze with that segment, or if conducting a Live Conversation, you can choose to schedule a [follow up Video Interview with your selection.](https://help.remesh.ai/live-conversation-to-video-interview?hsLang=en)

In order to program advanced segments before your Conversation, you will need to [upload participant data](https://help.remesh.ai/upload-participant-data?hsLang=en) or [participant emails](https://help.remesh.ai/manage-email-invitations-and-reminders?hsLang=en). If you are programming advanced segments while your Conversation is collecting data, [single or unique participant links](https://help.remesh.ai/audience-links?hsLang=en) may be used.

### Using Segments

Segments can be accessed throughout the Remesh platform and are used to cut your data based upon audience demographics. Below are a few examples of where you can use Segments.

- Create a segment, then follow up with that small group for a [Video Interview after your Live Conversation.](https://help.remesh.ai/live-conversation-to-video-interview?hsLang=en)
- While your Conversation is collecting data, [analyze using segments by clicking the "Analyze" button under any question that has been sent.](https://help.remesh.ai/analyze-the-data-in-real-time?hsLang=en)
- The [Topline PowerPoint export](https://help.remesh.ai/what-is-the-conversation-topline-powerpoint?hsLang=en), available after your conversation has ended, allows you to select 3 Segments to include in your export.
- The [Post Conversation Analysis Results](https://help.remesh.ai/post-conversation-analysis-results?hsLang=en) space allows you to utilize Segments on question responses and in features such as [Thematic Clusters](https://help.remesh.ai/thematic-clusters-uncovering-themes-among-open-ended-responses-based-on-their-meaning?hsLang=en) and [Sentiment Labels](https://help.remesh.ai/analyze-open-end-responses-using-sentiment-labels?hsLang=en).
- [Summarize](https://help.remesh.ai/summarize-generate-initial-summaries-from-your-remesh-conversation?hsLang=en) and [Auto Code](https://help.remesh.ai/auto-code-automatically-tag-and-organize-themes-from-open-ended-responses?hsLang=en), which leverage a Large Language Model to organize and analyze open-end responses, also allow you to utilize Segments in your analysis.

### Frequently Asked Questions

- **What logic is used when creating segments?**  
  When adding multiple options within a single Poll question, 'Or' logic will be used. For Segments that use multiple Polls questions, 'And' logic will be used.
- **When can I create segments?**  
  You can create segments before, during or after your Conversation based upon any Poll question that was asked.
